Indigenous Justice

The Indigenous Justice Coordinator, Constance Manitowabi, facilitates access to justice for Indigenous clients by collaborating with Indigenous nations, agencies and groups, as well as supports culturally respectful and appropriate clinic law services. Constance can be contacted at constance.manitowabi@algo.clcj.ca or 705 542 9317, and is always open to making connections and building relationships.

Catchment Area

Our catchment area includes the following Indigenous nations: Batchewana First Nation, Garden River First Nation, Missanabie Cree First Nation, Michipicoten First Nation, Thessalon First Nation, the Métis Nation of Ontario, and urban Indigenous people. We provide services to anyone residing in our catchment area. To find out if you live in our catchment area, contact us or use the "Find a Legal Clinic" tool.

Services

Clinic services in housing law, social services law, employment law, and our ID clinic are open to anyone in our catchment area who qualifies financially for our services. Services that are specific to Indigenous people include applying Gladue principles in appropriate social benefits and landlord/tenant matters as well as supporting people in reclaiming their Indigenous names on government documents. For more information about reclaiming Indigenous names on government documents, visit this link.

The clinic also welcomes conversations with Indigenous nations, groups, and agencies about our areas of practice and advocacy work. We are happy to tailor presentations to Indigenous legal needs and interests. We also produce legal education materials such as fact sheets, advocacy articles, PowerPoint presentations, and information on this website.

First Nations, First Thoughts Committee

The First Nations, First Thoughts Committee is an advisory committee that meets quarterly to review and implement the Reconciliation Strategy for the Algoma Community Legal Clinic, helping to guide actions, policies, programs and initiatives into the future. If you are interested in sitting on the committee, please contact Constance Manitowabi. Promoting Indigenous voices is the priority of the Committee.
